DouglaPrieta Works (DouglaPrieta Trabaja, or DPT) is a ministry partner of Frontera de Cristo. It began in 2003 as a grassroots self-help project in Agua Prieta, Sonora, just across the border from Douglas, Arizona. DPT’s purpose is to help individuals and families in colonias populares (poor neighborhoods) become self-sufficient.
DPT sponsors a carpentry shop, where migrants build beautiful furniture from recycled pallets, learning a skill that can assist them in finding gainful employment in their home towns. DPT also offers adult classes in English as a second language. In the community garden, families can learn sustainable food production techniques, including organic gardening, aquaculture, and small livestock raising. This helps to reduce the cost of living, and at the same time builds an ethic of mutual aid among neighbors in order to reduce dependency on weak job markets, government assistance, charity, and border crossing.
In addition to livestock raising and gardening, the Women’s Cooperative teaches sewing and quilting skills to local women, who make a variety of products, from potholders and placemats, to quilted bags, aprons, and other creative household products. Your purchases of their goods support the DouglaPrieta Center and are used to pay the workers, cover the cost of materials, and help pay the costs of the center itself, so that the community can continue to become more self-sufficient while they raise their families.
