Philemon: Bound and Free
Scripture: Philemon 1:1-21 (NRSV)
There are good ways and not so good ways to work through uncomfortable situations or conflict in our lives. Some unhealthy responses are to avoid, absorb, or attack. Avoiding the situation is called the Brush it Under the Rug Strategy. Or we can absorb all of the responsibility on ourselves, known as the Fetch it Fido Philosophy. And then we can attack, famously described as the Bull in the China Shop Approach. But Jesus says to our survival strategies that have outlived their usefulness, “Behold, I make all things new.” Let’s learn from the Apostle Paul and Christ how we can be unshackled from the chains of our expired ways of thinking, living, and being in the book of Philemon.
