Sermon Series

August
The beginning of August marks a turning point for Immanuel. It’s the beginning of a new school year. We return to two worship services. The Session will continue its work as IPC prepares to call a new pastor. It’s an opportune time to think about how we go about discerning our priorities.
In the coming weeks, we will embark on a sermon series entitled “Priorities,” focusing on how Jesus calls us to reshape our lives around God’s values. Using lectionary passages from the Gospel according to Luke, each sermon will help us explore where our hearts, time, and resources are truly invested. A little spiritual “homework” for you: read all of chapters 12 and 13 in Luke and ask yourself, “How are the priorities in my life reflected here? How are they not?” We won’t cover all of those two chapters in worship, but there are some applicable and challenging passages in there that I highly recommend.
For this series, we’ll begin with Luke 12:13-21 (sermon title, “Priorities: Stuff”). Jesus warns against greed and the illusion of security in material possessions. The parable of the rich fool will prompt us to consider whether we are storing up treasures for ourselves or becoming “rich toward God.”
In the second week, Luke 12:32-40 (“Priorities: Money”) will remind us to place our trust in God rather than in wealth. Jesus encourages his followers to live generously and to stay ready, with hearts focused on the eternal rather than the temporary.
In the third week, Luke 12:49-56 (“Priorities: Time”), Jesus speaks of urgency and the importance of recognizing the times we live in. We will be encouraged to invest our time in ways that reflect God’s purposes and our calling as disciples.
Finally, Luke 13:10-17 (“Priorities: People”) will re-tell the story of a powerful moment of healing on the Sabbath. Jesus teaches that people matter more than rules or appearances. We will be invited to see others through the lens of compassion and to make loving others a true priority.
This series will help us align our lives with God’s reign—valuing what our Creator values and living each day with purpose. Join us for the journey!
