Community Food Bank

Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona responds to the root causes of hunger and seeks to restore dignity, health, opportunity and hope to people living in poverty. Their mission is to change lives in the communities they serve by feeding the hungry today, and building a healthy, hunger-free tomorrow. The Community Food Bank serves five counties in Southern Arizona: Cochise, Graham, Greenlee, Pima, and Santa Cruz. In total, that represents just over 23,000 square miles and over 1.2 million people.

In Pima County alone, there are more than 150,000 people considered “food insecure.” You can help to make the holidays happier for them through your contribution to the Community Food Bank. For each donation made in honor of someone, the Community Food Bank will send them a holiday card acknowledging your gift.

Sol Food Initiatives

Sol Food Initiatives cooks up collaborations of food and joy in East Tucson for the alleviation of hunger and the cultivation of community among the economically vulnerable. They currently serve individuals and families in East and Central Tucson by providing healthy meals for curb-side pickup or delivery.

How it works: Sol Food partners with two local businesses that had been struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic: Café 54, a nonprofit that hires adults in mental health recovery and trains them in the science of food preparation, and Pivot Produce, a small business that supplies local farm ingredients to restaurants. Each Sol Food Delivered meal can feed a household of four and also comes with a bag of fresh produce. Café 54 prepares wholesome complete meals in generous portions. Meals are prepared the commercial kitchen at Saguaro Christian Church at the corner of Broadway and Sarnoff.

How you can help: This holiday season, Sol Food is expanding their capacity to 100 household meals the week of Thanksgiving and Christmas. They will also be offering meals for pick-up or delivery before the holiday weekend, in case these meals are the only holiday meals they might enjoy together. The delivery of these meals will also allow our more vulnerable neighbors to remain in their homes, rather than venturing out into crowded grocery stores.

Imagine the joy that you will bring to a family by providing a holiday meal just once … or a weekly meal for a month.

Tucson Samaritans

Samaritans have been a voice of compassion and a healing presence in the Arizona desert since July 1, 2002. They respond directly, practically, and compassionately to the crisis at the US/Mexico border.

Samaritans are a diverse group of volunteers from various faith traditions who are united in their desire to relieve suffering among our brothers and sisters and to honor their human dignity. Prompted by the mounting number of deaths from dehydration and exposure, Samaritans provide emergency medical assistance, food, and water to people crossing the Sonoran Desert. Many of Samaritans’ volunteers are fluent Spanish speakers, and many are nurses, doctors, and wilderness first responders.

Samaritans travel daily on the desert in southern Arizona, continuing the ancient Southwest tradition of hospitality to travelers. They have two 4WD vehicles to navigate backroads and rough terrain. The vehicles carry water, food, emergency medical supplies, communication equipment, maps and individual traveler-packs containing items necessary to survive in the desert.

Samaritans is a 501c3 ministry of Southside Presbyterian Church, Tucson, AZ.
